How to Commission a Custom Pet Portrait

Collage of 4 pet portraits created by Kris Horton: a boxer, a chocolate lab, a long hair cat, an Australian shepherd.

Thinking about a pet portrait?

Hi, I'm Kris

Pets are family.

And when I paint a portrait, I’m not just capturing what your pet looks like — I’m capturing who they are.

  • The tilt of their head.
  • The warmth in their eyes.
  • The little details only you would notice.

Each portrait is created with care and made to become a forever keepsake in your home — or a deeply meaningful gift for someone you love.

1. Choose Your Size

Pick the size that feels right for your space. Not sure which one is best? I'm happy to help you decide — just ask.

2. Select Your Photo

A clear, well-lit photo helps me capture your pet's true personality and the details that make them uniquely theirs.

3. Share Your Pet's Story

Fill out the Start My Pet Portrait form and tell me everything — their name, special markings, favorite expressions, and anything that makes them who they are. If this is a gift, I can help keep it a beautiful surprise.

4. Reserve Your Spot

Once I've reviewed your photo and details I'll confirm everything looks good and send your invoice. A 50% deposit is required to secure your place on my commission calendar — this is how I ensure every portrait gets my full time and attention.

5. I Get to Work

I begin painting your portrait with care, honoring the personality and spirit of your pet in every detail. If you'd like, I'm happy to share progress photos along the way so you can see your portrait come to life.

6. It Arrives Ready to Love

Once your portrait is complete I'll send you a final photo for your approval. Your remaining balance is due at this time before shipment.

When everything is just right, your finished portrait is carefully packaged and on its way to you — matted in an acid-free beveled mat and backing board, ready to frame the moment it arrives. Tucked inside you'll also find your Certificate of Authenticity and care instructions to help you protect and enjoy your portrait for years to come.

It's my hope that every time you walk past it, it makes your heart a little fuller. 🤍
